That Florida Flood: Updating Woody Guthrie’s “Dusty Old Dust”

I’ve sung this song, but I’ll sing it once more
Of the place that I lived by that Florida shore
In the month of September, county called Lee
And here’s what the people there sang unto me

So long, it’s been good to know ye
So long, it’s been good to know ye
So long, it’s been good to know ye
This mighty great flood is a-gettin’ my home
And I’ve got to be driftin’ along

That hurricane hit, an’ it hit like thunder
It flooded us out, an’ it covered us under
Blocked out the traffic an’ blocked out the sun
Straight for high ground all the people did run, singin’
So long…

We talked of the end of the world, and then
We’d sing a song an’ then sing it again
We’d sit there and scroll until our phones died
And then we’d take up this song with a sigh
Singin’, so long…

Sweethearts sat in the dark and sparked
They hugged and kissed in that watery dark
They sighed and cried, hugged and kissed
Too much debt to get married, so we’ll just sing this
Honey, so long…

Now, my cell phone rang an’ it jumped in my hand
That was the preacher, known through the land
He said, “Kind friend, this may be the end
An’ you’ve got your last chance of salvation of sin”
The churches was jammed and the churches was packed
An’ that hurricane storm blowed so black
Preacher could not read a word, that’s a fact
An’ he took out his contacts an’ he took up collection, said
So long…
